A literal cyber invasion has taken placed with Nicaraguan troops apparently invading a Costa Rican island having followed a map on Google which places the island within their own boundaries.

The troops planted a flag on Calero Island, having crossed the San Juan river, which divides Costa Rica from Nicaragua, with the island sitting in a border region.

The two countries have fiercely contested the sovereignty of the island, although it has been recognised as being part of Costa Rica for over a century, although Google maps placed it within Nicaraguan boundaries.

The Costa Rica Government has pleaded with Google to change the border on its maps following an inquiry where it admitted to having made the mistake, blaming bad data from the US state department.

However the Nicaraguan Government has also contacted Google to say that their map is actually correct.
