A news blackout at the BBC is threatened as BBC journalists begin a 48-hour strike action this morning, heavily affecting the broadcaster's radio and TV news programmes.

Thousands of National Union of Journalists (NUJ) members have gone on strike for 48 hours as part of the row over pension plans.

Included in the action are news readers Fiona Bruce and Huw Edwards, while Radio 4’s The Today Programme has already been forced off the air.

The strike action was taken by NUJ members as the BBC looks to change its pension plans to fill a deficit of over £1 billion, threatening the loss of pensions already paid by many members of the broadcaster’s staff.

Prerecorded programmes such as the one used to fill the three hour Today Programme slot, are set to run during the 48 hour strike, with a skeleton staff also trying to fill in.

Jeremy Dear, general secretary of the NUJ, has already said that he expects the BBC to be ‘a shadow of itself’ during the strike action.

Further strike action is expected to take place over the Christmas period.
