The online environment provides global and local news media providers the opportunity to deliver news at the touch of a button. A new event aims to find out who are the very best online news content providers.

This new global awards scheme aims to recognise and reward the best and the boldest in delivering online news and topical content and already in the running are media brands such as the BBC, New York Times, India Times, Reuters and ABC News.

The Online Media Awards recognises that by creating an event that will pit some of the world's largest media websites against some of the smallest. The big boys may take some of the accolades. But this is an opportunity for new and original websites to perform in the same arena and win. With great resources and imagination, you would think the big boys are unbeatable, yet it was a small website TMZ.com which brought the world the news of Michael Jackson's death.

The Online Media Awards will draw entries from all over the world. Websites already in contention are drawn from countries including the US, UK, India, Australia, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. This reflects the fact that in the world of online, there are no international boundaries.

With that in mind we have created a judging panel broad in scope and experience – stretching from Beijing to Australia to America and to Britian. Already signed up to sit in judgement are:

• France-based Jim Chisholm, advisor to the European Commission on newspaper distribution

• Boston-based former editor of the Sunday Mail Noel Young

• London-based PR Guru Lynne Franks

• Dundee-based David Mill of MediaCo

• Glasgow-based former Herald editor Charles McGhee

• Beijing-based journalist and editor Chris Mullinger

• Texas-based Deputy editor of Texas Watchdog Jennifer Peebles

• Melbourne-based former editor of The Age Andrew Jaspan

• New York-based editor Mark McSherry

• Canadian writer Ron Laytner.
