The BBC is set to pull out of its broadcast deal to cover the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, which would have saved millions of pounds for the event.

The Scotsman reports that the BBC has turned down the opportunity to be the host broadcaster of the event, which would have meant it providing cameras and television equipment from its headquarters in Glasgow.

It is believed that the decision is due to the financial pressures that the broadcaster is being put under in the current climate, and could mean that the Glasgow games will need to pay private broadcasters to provide coverage instead.

MSPs have published a report questioning the financing of the 2014 Games, which revealed the BBC’s decision as it looks to provide best value for license payers.

The paper reports that the cost of hiring private broadcasting firms could cost the organisers up to £30 million, with the TV rights likely to be worth less than £20 million.

Gordon Arthur, spokesperson for the Games 2014 explained that the organisers would put the contract out to tender in the hope of find large private broadcasters which specialise in major sporting events.

While the BBC will not be host broadcaster, it may still have involvement in ‘supporting’ the event.
