GMG Radio has promoted Billy Anderson to managing director of its Real Radio and Rock Radio stations.

Anderson, who was previously regional MD and responsible for overseeing GMG's stations in Scotland and North East England, will take up the newly-created post in December.

The stations' individual MDs will report to Anderson and in turn he will report to GMG Radio's chief executive, Stuart Taylor.

Taylor said: “I am delighted we have been able to find the right person for this position within our own talented pool of staff.

"Billy understands and is passionate about both the Real and Rock brands and the people that work for both. He will ensure both brands stay clearly focused and well placed to meet the needs of both listeners and advertisers in the future.”

Anderson, who has worked at Auto Trader and The Drum during a 20-year media career, has been with GMG since joining Real Radio Scotland upon its launch in 2002.

He rose from being the station's sales director to its deputy MD before becoming managing director of its sister Scottish stations Smooth and Rock radio.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to work with some of the most talented people in the business," Anderson said.

"I see huge potential for both Real and Rock to grow further and I’m looking forward to helping the teams realise this potential and provide commercial opportunities, particularly for Real, which really utilise the strength of the brands both individually and as a network," he added.
