French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s model wife has delayed the launch of her new album over fears that malcontent voters might read her the riot act.

The Times reports that the Elysee Palace has moved to save Carla Bruni from a ‘Marie-Antoinette’ moment after a million protesters took to the streets yesterday, angered at a planned rise in the retirement age.

It was feared that a simultaneous CD launch could prove a PR disaster for the Sarkozy’s with the husky voiced pop singer drowned out by the braying mobs on the streets.

Officials were concerned that the site of the former supermodel sitting pretty and singing could goad protestors who have been hurt by a wave of fiscal austerity measures, a 21st century rerun of Queen Marie Antoinette’s refrain to revolting peasants: “Let them eat cake.”

French weekly Paris Match observed: “How do you release a disc in the middle of a political debacle? How will that be seen by the voters? France suffers while Madame sings.”
