Lady Gaga met her fans in the flesh at the MTV Video Music Awards, with dogs safely leashed the star made a meal of her stage appearance by donning a fetching carnivore friendly dress of raw beef with matching boots, hat and handbag.

The PR stunt was designed to raise both the fashion steaks and Gaga’s offbeat reputation although the prank drew predictable outrage from animal rights fans who thought it was just offal.

Nevertheless the unconventional appearance appears to have gone down well with those sick of commercial pop’s clichés and formulas.

Explaining her raw performance Gaga later told the Ellen Degeneres show. “… if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And I am not a piece of meat.”

A sly reference to her female peers who are often pushed into provocative poses and clothing by record companies.
