The Drum has learned that Scott McCubbin has made a surprise exit from Manchester design agency Glorious after five years as its managing director.

McCubbin, who had combined the Glorious role with owning his own nursery, left last week and is now expected to work as a consultant.

He told The Drum he decided to leave because he has a young family and could no longer commit to a daily three-hour round trip from his home on Merseyside.

"We started thinking about what would be best six months ago," McCubbin said. "It was all hands to the pump to bring in new business, and with having two young kids the three hours of travelling a day had become too much to commit to.

"Before I left, Glorious brought in [experienced agency man] Jeff Edis to work on new business and with all the experience he brings it's worked out as a good time for me to follow other interests."

Before moving into the design industry McCubbin was a journalist, editing regional business title EN for five years and The Drum between September 1994 and December 1998.

He joined Glorious upon its relaunch in 2005, teaming up with directors Mark Ross and Tom Shaughnessy who until then had operated under the guise of Mat: Designers.

Ross said: "It's always quite sad when someone leaves because we're a small company and we're all very close. There was no fallout.

"But it's no secret that it's been tough because of the economic climate and we've brought in new clients that need lots of attention. That puts pressure on Scott's time and we were asking for more and more from him."

From the outset McCubbin had been heavily responsible for Glorious's new business efforts, a mantle that will now fall to the well-travelled Edis.

Edis has previously held senior positions at McCanns, TBWA, Barkers and DKPM and has now gone through a "handover" with McCubbin.

Ross said: "With bringing Jeff in with a business development remit, and knowing for a while that Scott was ready to leave, there has been a good crossover.

"Current clients have had continuation of service, we did a final handover last week, and Jeff is already working with new clients."
