GMG Radio has appointed Ofcom's John Furlong as the new controller of its Manchester TV station Channel M.

Furlong, who was a project manager for the commercial policy team at Ofcom, will now take editorial control over the channel's output in a bid to build it a sustainable business model.

He has previously been global head of programming for Ostrich Media, producing live shows for Channel Five and E4.

Channel M has been beset by cuts to its staff and programming since it was left out of the deal which saw the bulk of GMG's regional titles sold to Trinity Mirror.

But the channel aims to relaunch live local content soon and Furlong will work with his old employer Ofcom to "ensure that Channel M is well placed to benefit from developments in policy around local TV".

Furlong said: "The channel has huge potential, and we have a great opportunity to develop a new model for local TV.

“We have plans to both make and commission lively, entertaining programmes that reflect the personality of this vibrant, diverse and cultural city and connect with the people who live here.”
