Andy Carter has been appointed as the managing director of the new national Smooth Radio, which will launch at the beginning of October.

Carter will take on the role of MD for national brand in addition to his current duties as managing director of GMG Radio’s North West operations.

GMG is set to make Smooth Radio available of digital radio and television, as well as its FM platforms across the UK in the autumn, replacing its current analogue stations in England.

Taylor joined GMG Radio as programme director for the launch of Real Radio Yorkshire in 2001, progressing through the company to become managing director of Real Radio Wales.

He took up additional responsibility as MD of Smooth Radio London and West Midlands from 2006, before taking up his current position in the North West two years later, where he oversees Real, Smooth and Rock Radio in the region.

Stuart Taylor, chief executive of GMG Radio, commented: “Andy has a great understanding of both the Smooth brand and of UK commercial radio in general and is the perfect person to lead Smooth Radio as it enters the next, important phase.”

Andy Carter added: “This is an incredibly exciting time to be leading Smooth Radio’s transformation into a UK wide station. I’ve been consistently impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm shown towards the brand by the team working at Smooth, its listeners and commercial partners. The growth possibilities for our UK station are enormous.”
