BBC director general Mark Thompson is cutting his salary by almost 20% to placate staff who are angry about proposals to cap their pensions.

His pay and that of around 30 senior staff at the corporation will be reduced by scrapping extra pension payments which to go to top executives.

Workers were understood to have been unhappy that their pensions would only grow by one percent a year while the executive board would collect upto £646,000.

Thompson is expected to forgo £163,000 from his annual £838,000 pay package and other top executives will reduce their pay.

Mr Thompson told furious staff the executives' top-up pension payments were being reviewed as he faced them at a meeting to discuss proposals to cut their pensions on Monday.

He said "pension contributions should be as consistent and fair as they can be irrespective of seniority or juniority of the staff member involved".

The BBC has proposed the pension changes as it looks to tackle a £2bn funding deficit.
