Manchester's Bird Consultancy has been appointed to promote Power Snooker, a new fast-paced version of the game that aims to do for snooker what Twenty20 has done for cricket.

The inaugural Power Snooker tournament, which will be broadcast by ITV, will pit the world's best players against one another at London's O2 Arena in October.

Departing with snooker's age-old traditions, it will feature shorter matches and a new scoring system in a bid to appeal to a younger audience.

Bird has been briefed by Power Snooker to broker commercial relationships and develop media introductions. It will also assist with the launch activity in the lead up to the tournament.

The event has the backing of the sport's governing body, World Snooker, and the game's biggest star, Ronnie O'Sullivan, who described it as "the future of snooker".

Bird already handles O'Sullivan's media relations and through that relationship it was able to enlist the snooker legend to front the new tournament.

Chris Bird, chairman of Bird Consultancy said: "Power Snooker is going to be huge; it's a great new concept which will appeal to a much wider audience and it has the support and backing of the right people.

"It's a pleasure to be involved at the beginning of something so innovative and exciting."

Bird's appointment represents another snooker victory for the consultancy, which was hired by O'Sullivan in April and works with snooker hall chain Rileys.
