An unprecedented marketing blitz is underway today to signify the global release of Blizzard Studios Starcraft II, sequel to the top selling 12 year old strategy game.

Nowhere is more eagerly anticipating the release than South Korea however which has been transformed by a national obsession with the title into the most broadband wired nation on Earth.

With a quarter of South Koreans having played the game at least once, “gaming zones” appearing on city streets and a betting industry springing up on the back of professional players antics the game has forged a burdgeoning sector of the South Korean economy.

Analysts predict that seven million copies of the game will be sold before the year is out but governments will be hoping to contain some of the less savoury fanaticism associated with the product. This includes the reported case of a South Korean man murdering his mother when told to stop playing.
