Whilst most would welcome a host of Hollywood stars queuing to gatecrash our party some comic book fans are up in arms at the prospect of Angelina Jolie, Will Ferrell and Helen Mirren hobnobbing with diehard fans in fantasy figure costumes.

For the geeks of Comic-Con, an annual pop culture convention in San Diego, California, these unwanted guests are threatening to strip away their nerdiness as popular culture subsumes its fringe adherents in an all encompassing embrace.

Critics bemoan what they see as Hollywood’s takeover of the event as studios seek to tap into the unrivalled passion and activism of Comic-Cons members, many of whom are partial to dressing as their favourite superhero.

Blogger OnMedea wrote: "Hollywood owns this convention now. The only chance for the geeks is to boycott it and start a new one."
