Scottish broadcaster STV has praised the Governments plans to improve access to superfast broadband following a speech by Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt yesterday in which he pledged to improve broadband access across the UK.

Yesterday, Hunt pledged that the UK would have the "best superfast broadband network in Europe" by 2015. This is three years later than the previous Government’s promise to ensure that every household in Britain had broadband access.

Nevertheless, STV CEO Rob Woodward has praised the move, recently after the company signed a deal with YouTube for rights to stream 2500 hours of its archived content.

Woodward commented; “STV welcomes the Government’s commitment to a rapid roll-out of a superfast and superior broadband infrastructure across the UK. As Scotland’s digital media business, STV recognises this investment is critical in supporting the emergence of a vibrant and successful digital sector in Scotland. For STV, this infrastructure will enable us to accelerate the provision of innovative digital services to our audience”

He continued by highlighting the company’s plans to launch hyper local mobile and online service STV Local for local communities across Scotland as another step that the STV is taking to move to becoming an multimedia broadcaster.

“This announcement will help ensure that our future services can be accessed and enjoyed by communities across the country,” added Woodward.
