A new brand of apple looks set to have rivals seeing red after the first red fleshed apple saplings went on sale in the UK.

Suttons, who own the British rights to the variety, expect the apples to be available commercially within five years and have already experienced a bumper crop of orders.

The world’s first red fleshed apple is rich in antioxidants and is said to be tastier than its paler complexioned cousins.

It is the fruit of 20 years breeding by Swiss grower Markus Kobert who cross pollinated Royal Gala, Braeburn and a “secret variety” of apple to create the eye catching fruit.
