A new campaign to expose West Lothian’s ‘hidden gems’ has launched, aiming to encouraging more people to explore the region.

Despite its many ‘hidden gems’, research has shown that relatively few people can pinpoint West Lothian on the map – with many in central Scotland even struggling to do so.

The campaign is to highlight a number of family-focused events within West Lothian over the year ahead, as well as stressing the quality tourism offering of the area both to day trippers and those seeking a longer stay.

Through its new website, promotions, discounts and other incentives to entice visitors will be available.

Part of the campaign also sees the publication of ‘Top 10’ facts about the area. These include:

West Lothian has the youngest population in Scotland: average age of 36 against a Scottish average of 39Susan Boyle, Leon Jackson and David Tennant are all from West LothianThe area is a key Scottish golfing hub with 14 coursesBathgate plays host to the first Highland Games in the calendar yearMary Queen of Scots was born in Linlithgow Palace in1542

Martyn Day, Chair of VWL, said of tha campaign: “Visit West Lothian is a campaign which is long overdue. This area has so much to be proud of and so much for visitors to see and do. We have the youngest population in Scotland and one that is extremely proud of its local area. The campaign will aim to highlight the great offering in West Lothian, especially for families and for those who are interested in Scotland’s history as there is much of this to be discovered within the area.”
