Media watchdog Ofcom has announced that it is to review its operations as part of the public sector cost cutting process, but has highlighted that the review will not focus on job cuts, but rather on creating a “more efficient” operation.

Today, Ed Richards, chief executive of Ofcom announced to staff that the annual budget of £142 million faced “significant” cuts and that he had decided to take a pay cut of 10 percent.

A spokesperson for Ofcom told The Drum that the media regulator, which employs 873 staff, had begun the review which it expects to complete by late summer.

The spokesperson added; “What we are going to be doing is concentrating on ways to be more efficient rather than cut what we’re doing. So we’ll be looking to continue what we have been doing but be more efficient in doing so. Decisions about offices and jobs have not yet been taken but what we’ve done is a slightly unusual step in not just coming up with the answer and then telling people about it, we’re consulting with colleagues and discussing it before making a final decision.”
