The chairman of the BBC Trust has said that the highest paid salaries at the broadcaster should be disclosed to the public as it looks for more ‘openness’ but has said that ‘full transparency’ is not possible.

Sir Michael Lyons, chairman of the BBC Trust has called for the top salaries of its top ‘talent’ to be published in a bid ‘to recapture public confidence,’ while the organisation looks to cut its expenditure on senior staff by a quarter.

The move is likely to lead to the disclosure of deals for its leading presenters such as Graeme Norton, Jeremy Paxman and Ann Robinson.

BBC staff earning more than £37,726 a year have already been told they will see their pay frozen this year, while those who earn less will receive a rise of £475.

Lyons also announced that plans to close the BBC’s final salary pension scheme to new employees will be put in place by the end of the year.
