As Apple’s ordering websites crash under the weight of demand for iPhone4 pre-orders the technology company has been left grappling with some less PR friendly news.

Twin security breaches on AT&T’s website, in which customers were privy to details of others accounts and thousands of iPad users emails were nicked, had already ticked off many but now another irritant is in the spotlight.

In the UK O2, Vodafone, Orange and 3 are competing to offer the £499 device on contract terms but all are currently in the dock over claims that they offer “unlimited” access after users complained that use of the word was misleading.

Mobile operators impose a “fair use” cap upon customers despite publicity to the contrary, stoking umbrage from those receiving warnings that they have exceeded this lower limit.

Now the Advertising Standards Authority is investigating the matter, leading to the possibility that providers will be banned from advertising “unlimited broadband” unless they offer a genuinely unlimited service.
