Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) has announced it is working in partnership with Tinopolis Interactive and the Herald & Times Group on the development of a new online news service for Scottish schools.

Available through Glow, the Scottish schools intranet that supports the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence, the news service will feature specially written daily news stories in English and Gaelic throughout the school year designed to appeal to the 9 to 16 target age group. The service will also feature support for teachers in lesson development and planning, using tools accessible through Glow.

The content will be developed in partnership with the Herald & Times Group and will be written to closely support Curriculum for Excellence by a team of journalists and educational advisers. Herald & Times Group Managing Editor, Tom Thomson, said: “We are delighted to be associated with this exciting initiative to bring quality news and comment to the young people of Scotland.”

Andrew Brown, hHead of Glow at LTS, said: “I’m delighted that the news service will soon be available through Glow, providing a safe and secure environment for users to access the service. This new partnership with tinopolisinteractive and the Herald & Times Group is an exciting opportunity for us at LTS, and a great development for users of Glow.”

Headquartered in Wales, with a Scottish office, Tinopolis Interactive is part of the UK independent television group, Tinopolis. It will handle design, build, hosting and ongoing management of the service. Alan Morgans, head of interactive at Tinopolis commented: “We are looking forward to working with LTS, building on our growing portfolio of work in Scotland, and drawing on our commitment to delivering innovation and editorial quality in education.”

Over the coming month the development of the new service can be followed by visiting www.ltscotland.org.uk/schoolsnewsservice with the service officially launch in August.
