The £1 million skills programme contract has been awarded to Vision+Media by the Northwest Regional Development Agengy (NWDA) as it looks to prepare the digital and creative industry in the region for the launch of MediaCity UK in Salford.

The contract will see the continuation of the Digital Media Skills Programme over the next two years, with the initial £1million finding projects set to run until March of next year, benefitting the creative scene across TV, radio, publishing, music, games, film and digital & creative services.

The programme aims to fill the digital skills gap and ensure that the workforce within the region will be ready to work at MediaCity UK, which will play home to five of the BBC’s major departments, amongst numerous media organisations.

The £1million fund will support new entrants to develop skills and gain experience within the sector and benefit employers through new talent and skills being brought into their businesses, allowing them to diversify their offering.

Lynne McCadden, director of skills and new projects at Vision+Media, said: “At Vision+Media we believe in creating a world class digital and creative economy in England’s Northwest. Among our staff are some of the industry’s leading experts, who have daily contact with creative companies and individuals and are therefore best placed to identify the skills gaps and needs in the region.

“The Digital Media Skills Programme is critical to the continued success and growth of the digital media sector, in the face of rapidly changing technology and the shifting media landscape. Vision+Media will help create a workforce, which is equipped with the skills needed for the digital age and ready to make the most of the exciting opportunities ahead.”

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, added: “The Digital and Creative sector is a priority sector for the Northwest and will be a key area in driving the region’s growth as we start to come out of the recession. This programme will fill the digital skills gap and build on the previous programme, which has already improved the skills of over 800 people. We must continue to improve the skills in the digital field to ensure that Northwest companies and media professionals can get the skills at all levels to exploit opportunities of BBC North and MediaCityUK.”
