The Drum has learned that Billy Mawhinney, former creative director of BJL, has joined McCann Erickson Birmingham as acting executive creative director.

Mawhinney is set to begin his role at McCann’s on Wednesday and will oversee the creative output for the agency while CEO Dean Lovett continues to look at the structure of the department with the impending departure of creative director Gary Setchell, who is set to leave the industry to become a teacher.

Steve Henry, non-executive creative director at McCann’s Birmingham remains at the agency as a consultant, with Mawhinney charged with overseeing the work of the agency’s creative group heads.

Lovett told The Drum that the appointment of Mawhinney was part of his investment strategy to improve the agency’s creative reputation while deciding the structure for the creative department in the long-term.

Mawhinney left BJL in March after two years overseeing its creative department, having joined from Leo Burnett.

So is he a bit-part player, like Steve Henry? Two directors of football but still no manager?

Billy is the Kung Foo of advertising. He does things, then moves on. Walking the earth with sad music as his friend.

Maybe he's the Incredible Hulk? The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter...one day maybe he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.

By talent, personality and passion, he's succesfully arrived at a place that every CD dreams of. Just concentrating on the creative product, raising the bar, firing up the creative department, putting in the succesion, moving on. No getting stale, no getting bored, no groundhog days, no politics, no 'watching your back' every other day - god I envy him so much!!

I think this is a smart move for both parties. I guarantee every Creative who was making a list of agencies to visit in the Midlands, but skipped McCann, will be having second thoughts. And the Creatives who already work there probably can't believe their luck.

Making hey while the sun shines! It would be nice to see agencies employ senior creative’s with digital credentials, it is about time the 70/80’s ‘sad men’ who have not moved on stopped relying on the old boys network and were put out to grass.

There aren't any who are good enough, 16:24. Digital 'creatives' are just electronic artworkers.

Why would Billy need digital credentials? He can do proper advertising.

Contrary to what you have convinced yourself, digital is not the entirety of our industry, but another delivery channel through which to market our client's business. And why are you so insecure that you use the phrase "70/80's sad men" You should accord many of these people whom you think should be put out to grass, a bit more respect, because they have forgotten more about this industry than you will ever learn with such a childish display of arrogance.

@16.24 Remember a couple of years ago when Grey in London got caught up in the digital hysteria and hired a digital CD - Jon Williams(?). Well look what he's gone on and done...like...er...that game for Frijj milkshakes...

@16.24: Good ideas are good ideas, it doesn't matter what the media is. And it's 'Hay'. And 'Creatives'.

Mark - stop proof checking, it's not good for your image! Agree with your comments, though. I think BM is an excellent appointment, although i do wonder why the talented bunch over there never get a look in for an internal promotion. Even Gaz had to go away to show he could handle the big job.

10.50 has not been answered - why is he 'acting'? - Is this not his new job or what? - 'Acting' makes it sound like he's doing it for a week or two then moving on when someone else takes over.
