The Drum has learned that Billy Mawhinney, former creative director of BJL, has joined McCann Erickson Birmingham as acting executive creative director.

Mawhinney is set to begin his role at McCann’s on Wednesday and will oversee the creative output for the agency while CEO Dean Lovett continues to look at the structure of the department with the impending departure of creative director Gary Setchell, who is set to leave the industry to become a teacher.

Steve Henry, non-executive creative director at McCann’s Birmingham remains at the agency as a consultant, with Mawhinney charged with overseeing the work of the agency’s creative group heads.

Lovett told The Drum that the appointment of Mawhinney was part of his investment strategy to improve the agency’s creative reputation while deciding the structure for the creative department in the long-term.

Mawhinney left BJL in March after two years overseeing its creative department, having joined from Leo Burnett.
