In a deal which mimics many in the USA, Yahoo has secured sports rights in the UK that will enable it to screen football highlights packages online.

Kicking off next season in August, yahoo.co.uk visitors will get access to five minute highlights packages from midnight on Sundays and midnight on the same day as weekday matches.

Speaking of the deal Rich Riley, Yahoo’s European MD, said: “The acquisition of Premier League rights shows how serious we are about providing the best in video content for our both our users and advertisers.”

Richard Scudamore, CEO of the Premier League, said: “The way fans access Barclays Premier League action is growing more diverse and sophisticated. The online highlights package is an important medium for supporters of all our clubs to be able to follow match action.”

Yahoo has similar deal to this one operating in the US for sport such as basketball, golf and ice hockey.
