Rajars record slight increase in commercial radio listening

The Rajar results for the fourth quarter of 2009 have show that commercial radio across the UK made a slight increase its share in the market with a total reach of 421,063, 000 hours recorded.

The increase is only 58 hours ahead of the previous quarter figures which was recorded at 427,905,000 hours.

The largest shift saw Heat drop by 28.3% of the market share from 623,000 hours to 447,000 hours and Absolute Radio Classic Rock picked up 21.2% of audience reach growing from 179,000 hours to 217,000.

XFM across the UK lost 5.7% of the market, with listening hours falling from 934,000 to 881,000 while TalkSport saw an increase of 22,000 hours across the three months, growing from 2, 474,000 to 2, 496,000 hours – a market share growth of 0.9%.

The Scottish stations saw Galaxy Scotland pick up 62,000 hours, the largest increase of the Scottish stations over the three month period growing from 250,000 to 312,000 listeners.

Clyde record an increase from the previous quarter by 10 hours from 635 to 645, while sister Bauer station Forth saw a decrease by 20 hours over the quarter, falling from 360,000 to 340,000 hours.

Real Radio (Scotland) retained the highest single figures which went from 693,000 to 670,000 while fellow GMG brands Smooth Radio saw an increase from 202,000 to 215,000 hours and Rock Radio went from 56,000 to 54,000.

This meant that Galaxy claimed 24.8% increase of the market audience while Bauer Scotland overall lost 0.3% and GMG Scotland lost 2.8%.

Bauer continues to have the greatest reach in the country, recorded at 1,700,000 hours across all of its stations in total.
