It appears, following breaking news on (erm) Twitter, that Donald Martin is to step down from his role as editor in chief of the Glasgow Newsquest titles The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times.

According to reports, Martin will take on the role of editor at The Sunday Post.

An email to all staff at Newsquest confirmed his imminent departure to edit the DC Thomson flagship where he described it as fulfilling a "lifetime's ambition".

Martin said: "I would not be in the position to have been offered the role without the tremendous career development and confidence senior management had in me during my four years at the Herald & Times Group, firstly editing the Evening Times and latterly the Herald as editor-in-chief."

"I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have been given and will be sad to leave behind such a talented team."

The Drum understands that the news came as a surprise to both staff at Newsquest and DC Thomson, publisher of The Sunday Post.

Martin has been something of a controvesial character at Newsquest in Glasgow, overseeing the axing of staff, implementing new working agreements and overseeing the end of traditional working practices.

Martin was appointed editor-in-chief of the newspapers in December 2008, having joined the group earlier as editor of The Evening Times.

He succeeds David Pollington, who retired from the newspaper last year.
