Taking place on Wednesday 4 November at Liverpool John Moores University’s Art and Design Academy, Liverpool Design Symposium 2009's theme is Branding the City, with a high profile line up of speakers and events.

Headlining the Symposium will be Michael Wolff of Michael Wolff & Company, recognised globally as a leader in thinking on brands and co-founder of Wolff Olins, one of the world’s most iconic design companies. Wolff has been brought to the Design Symposium courtesy of D&AD as part of its President’s Lecture series.

Another of the day’s key speakers is Andy Chambers, twice BAFTA winner and co-founder of Digit, one of the UK’s longest established digital design companies. Chambers' talk is entitled: "The Adaptive City: Debranding Liverpool – Why brands must be in flux to be interesting".

D&AD will also be running a series of student-focused sessions as part of its Education programme. The day will kick off with a talk on the D&AD Student Awards, with general advice for graduating students on how best to present themselves and their work in the current economic climate.

Design and Digital Workshops as well as Portfolio Surgeries – one-on-one sessions with creative professionals – will follow, together with a Workshop specifically for university tutors.

The effectiveness of design will be a key topic throughout the day, with the DBA (Design Business Association) presenting a session by Ian Thompson, creative director at Thompson Brand Partners, who will be talking to students about "designing effectively to get the best jobs", and an exhibition on the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards, displaying this year’s 13 Gold winners.

The DBA will also be running a session on Effective Design in the Public Sector led by Peter Mills, consulting director at The Team and Deborah Dawton, CEO at the DBA.

The Roses Design Awards will once again feature in the programme with a nominations and winners exhibition, while D&AD’s Everyone Starts Somewhere exhibition will be on display.

The Liverpool Design Symposium was originally conceived by Liverpool agencies Uniform, Smiling Wolf and Black & Ginger.

Part of the Liverpool Design Festival, it is now into its second year and is a product of collaboration between D&AD and DBA alongside the city’s creative industry bodies, Merseyside ACME and Design Initiative, together with the Roses Design Awards / The Drum.

Booking is now open at www.liverpooldesignsymposium.co.uk
