Fifth Design Event for north east to follow politics and play theme

The fifth annual Design Event, the North East’s annual design festival will follow the theme of politics and play.

Running from 16-25 October with a total of 25 exhibitions, talks, tours and events which will celebrate design in the North East including fashion, illustration, design, product and architecture.

A three-day selling exhibition will launch the festival at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

A digital tree will be installed at Newcastle’s Monument by Dutch designer Simon Heijdens which will be a project of an tree moving in the wind which responds to senses which look like glowing leaves. These will fall on the ground as people walk among them.

A Think Tank exhibition explore political issues of the future, examining ways to create a better society will be held, the result of seven of Britain’s leading policy think tanks and seven designers’ collaboration. Each has created a newly commissioned work to visualise and promote one idea which could make our lives better.

Also announced as part of this year’s festival will be an exhibition about sustainable children’s toys and an exploration of espionage equipment including the Enigma machine.

The Democracy exhibition will invite members of the public and design community to submit artwork and vote on which pieces the exhibition should include.

Jonathan Barnbrook of Barnbook Design and Sam Jacob from Fashion Architecture Taste have also been announced as speakers.
