The former Lucre board director Adrian Johnson has opened a new PR agency in Leeds.

Umpf is positioning itself as "one of a new breed of creative PR agencies" working across digital and social media as well as traditional channels.

It marks Johnson's return to the agency scene following his departure from Lucre in March, after four years at the Leeds-based PR business.

He told The Drum that PR's convergence with the digital industries presents new, untapped opportunties for public relations agencies and has helped shape Umpf's offer.

“Few agencies in the north are fully capitalising on the digital, social media and search engine marketing arena," Johnson said.

"And that’s not to say there aren’t some fantastic agencies around producing some great work. I just think there’s a wealth of opportunities that have yet to be fully harnessed.

“I want Umpf to be recognised for producing highly creative, highly targeted, clever and engaging campaigns across digital, social media, as well as traditional channels.”

The agency is already working with three clients, according to Johnson, but he was not able to divulge their identities. Three freelancers are working with him to service the business.

Johnson started his career at Wakefield Council and has spent 14 years in PR. He worked agency-side at Lynx and for the now defunct Leeds agency Poulters before joining Lucre.
