The Volume Group is to drop its webcaster News Gem as part of a website overhaul. The Drum calls for the industry to unite to stop this travesty.

News Gem first made her mark on the marketing community when she began broadcasting regular video news reports on The Volume Group’s website at www.volumegroup.co.uk, in August 2008. Gem proved an instant hit, an overnight success, and has been a regular contributor to the agency’s website content since then.

News Gem has carved out a niche for herself as the voice of not only her agency, but the voice of a generation of eager creative types trying to make their way in a difficult industry at a difficult time. However, a full scale website review at Volume, which will ultimately result in an all new singing and dancing online presence, now threatens the future of News Gem who is set to lose her slot.

Speaking of the review and the potential loss of News Gem, Chris Sykes, chief executive at The Volume Group, says: “News Gem started as a way for us to show the human face of Volume and attract high calibre candidates from London. We wanted to show talent that there was career progression, energy and great clients developing fresh new ideas outside London.

“It was also great motivation for the teams within the Volume Group and really brought people together in a fun way. We had hoped to continue to use the format to attract clients, and demonstrate to more brands the energy that exists outside the same old ‘London’ approach to communications.

“The changing face of our business and the demands on our resources mean we are no longer able to sustain the format, and I know I will miss the regular updates from the News Gem team!”

The Drum’s editor Richard Draycott said: “For many many years, well, since around 2008, News Gem has been a regular in the offices of The Drum. Her smiley face and crazy, sometimes dangerous antics, have kept us up to date with what’s been going on at Volume. We would appeal to Chris Sykes to give her a reprieve and keep her webcasts on the new site." Please help save News Gem by posting your comments of support below.
