StudioLR, the Edinburgh based graphic design consultancy, has created the a commemorative book for the Royal opening of Scotland's newest hydro electric power station.

The consultancy was commissioned to produce the book which tells the story of Glendoe through the words of people involved in its creation. Quotations were drawn from interviews conducted as part of the the UHI Centre for History's Glendoe Oral History Project, which was funded by the scheme's owner, Perth-based Scottish and Southern Energy.

The book, entitled 'Glendoe: Hydro is back' was presented to HM The Queen and other guests at the official opening of Glendoe Hydro Electric Scheme, the first large-scale conventional hydro electric station to be built in the UK for over 50 years.

At full output, Glendoe, which is situated near to Fort Augustus on the banks of Loch Ness, will generate enough energy to power every home in a city the size of Glasgow. During its construction, the £160m scheme was the largest civil engineering project in Scotland, involving a total of over 3,000 workers. The power station is housed in an underground chamber, making the station almost invisible.

Jennifer McGregor of Scottish and Southern Energy, who compiled the book, said: "Glendoe is a milestone project for Scotland and we're delighted to have captured its spirit in the book; it's a great memento for the people who helped make the scheme happen."
