The search for a creative consultancy to create the identity for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has launched, supported by The Drum and the Marketing Industry Network.

The process is now underway after being kicked off at the launch event, ‘Glasgow 2014: Search for an Identity’ at the Glasgow School of Art where over 50 creative design agencies were represented.

At the event, John Scott, chief executive of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee offered attendees an overview of the current planning phase of preparations for the Games, while John Donnelly, director of marketing and sponsorship provided more information on how the process for selecting a design partner will work over the coming months and some insight into what the selection criteria will be for interested consultancies.

The tendering process is being facilitated by marketing intermediary The Observatory which is helping to create the brief, which will be discussed with the design groups that make it through to the briefing stage later this year.

Donnelly said: "Our ultimate ambition is to create an iconic Games logo. The challenge that we are offering the creative community is to create a Games identity that will stand the test of time, an identity that the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow and Scotland can feel extremely proud of for many years to come.

"That is why we are looking to engage with as many people as we can at this early stage so that they understand what we are trying to do. Not everyone who came along to the launch event will ultimately get the brief, but we need to offer everyone the opportunity to get involved.”

Meanwhile, John Denholm, co-founder of The Leith Agency, has been appointed as chair of the marketing committee for the Games’ Organising Committee (OC).

The Joint Marketing Committee (JMC) comprises three representatives each from Commonwealth Games Scotland. Denholm will join the JMC as one of the OCs representatives and will act as chair. The Commonwealth Games Federation will also be represented at meetings of the JMC.

Denholm commented: “I am delighted to be joining Glasgow 2014. The Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event in Scotland in the next five to ten years and the commercial success of the Games is hugely important to Glasgow and Scotland as a whole.

"I look forward to playing my role in the development of an outstanding Games which will be a massive chapter in the history of Glasgow.”
