STV is to run a pilot scheme which will see the broadcaster invite media companies to join as partners who will help with its local news service.

The company hopes that the scheme to compile a group of outside providers who will be able to produce local TV news programming will be rolled out across the English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The move by STV follows Ed Richard, chief executive media regulator Ofcom calling for ITV’s local new programming system around the UK to be replaced.

Reports say that Rob Woodward, STV chief executive is in early stages of talks with media organizations around Scotland to create partnerships to take on the production of ITV1 local news bulletins.

Bobby Hain, director of broadcast services and regulatory affairs, said: "We’ve volunteered to be at the heart of a pilot for the Independently Funded News Consortia, with an overriding aim to help deliver a news service to meet the demands of audiences across the full range of platforms. We believe that STV, which holds the biggest platform and reach in Scotland, is well placed to drive the pilot and we look forward to discussing the possibility further with Ofcom and DCMS."

"This is a critical time for public service broadcasters and for the continued provision of regional news services across platforms. Public funding for news has moved a step closer but there is still a lot of work to do in securing this money and the first task is to explore further how this might work. We remain absolutely committed to providing a highly valued news service and ensuring plurality of services across Scotland."
