STV has announced that it has formed a deal with the MTV Network International to broadcast animated series South Park.

The deal will begin with STV broadcasting seven new episodes from the 12th series of the animated show South Park from 20 April.

STV has picked up the rights to broadcast South Park while it has also said that it hopes to co-commission and co-produce work alongside the satellite channel in the future.

With Alan Clements now working in his role as director of content at STV, the company is looking to opt-out of some of ITV’s content which do not perform strongly in Scotland and take a great control of its own schedule.

As a result it will look to invest into Scottish-produced programming as well as series with wider appeal, such as South Park, which will be rolled out across the year.

It has said that it’s intention is to develop a schedule catering for a range of audiences, with a mix of strong Scottish programming, acquired series and network material.

Clements, said: “It’s fantastic to bring something fresh, edgy and a little bit unexpected to the STV schedule, which we’re hoping will help us tap into a younger audience in the weeknight schedule. South Park, in addition to the raft of Scottish-produced commissions we’re working on, alongside strong network programming, will make for a very diverse STV schedule with something for everyone.”

Original commissions by STV to broadcast this year includes a documentary examining the symbols that give Scotland such strong visibility internationally; a countdown of great Scots, as voted for by the public. The vote will culminate in the unveiling of a statue of the nations Greatest National Hero.

Another series will explore Scotland from the air which will be filmed in High Definition and a series covering the stories of the many Scots who fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War.

Additional new series will be announced over the coming months.
