Glasgow born artist Calum Colvin’s exhibition has tasked veteran designer Ian McIlroy with the creation of the catalogue for his current exhibition ‘Natural Magic’ which is currently running at The Royal Scottish Academy.

The exhibition title is taken from “Letters in Natural Magic’ to Sir Walter Scott from Sir David Brewster and consists of a series of Colvin’s meticulously constructed images.

Four double portraits, Brewster, Wheatstone, Byron and Burns are each photographed from slightly different angles and stand either side of angled paired mirrors. When the mirrors are viewed close up, the pictures converge into a single three-dimensional image. The other works in the show require the green and red spectacles of anaglyph 3-D.

The catalogue has been created complete with stereopticon glasses. The images are carefully proportioned and printed side by side on fold out pages to enable the pictures to be viewed flat.

The stereoptican lenses are arranged so that one eye sees one and one eye sees the other.

Stetreoscopic vision is when two flat images are transformed into a single three-dimensional image.
