World Champion Downhill mountain biking family Team Atherton has appointed Slam to handle its PR relations.

The lifestyle division of Weber Shandwick won the account following a three way pitch against two London based agencies Brand Nation and Hall Associates and will now look to raise the profile of the Team and create interest around Downhill mountain biking.

Team Atherton is made up of brothers Dan, Gee and sister Rachel, who ride under the name Animal Commencal. The Athertons are currently training in America ahead of the 2009 season which starts in March.

Team director Dan Brown, explained: “Slam will be seeking new and exciting concepts to push the Atherton's into the mainstream media; to say we are excited about this partnership is an understatement! In the first few meetings we've held with SLAM they have done nothing but impress us with new ideas, dynamic thinking, endless contacts and their drive for success.”

Chris Dolan, from SLAM, said: “Downhill mountain biking is one of the fast-growing sports in the UK. The Athertons are well-known within the sport and are fantastic ambassadors which is illustrated by their high calibre of sponsorship and achievements to date.”
