Roger Parry, chairman of newspaper publisher Johnston Press, is to step down after eight years.

Parry will also retired as a director at the company’s AGM meeting which is scheduled to be held on 24 April.

He will be succeeded by Ian Russell on the following day.

Parry said: “The past 12 years have been characterised by industry consolidation. The last year has been about repsondo9ng to the recession. This will be the focus in the immediate term, together with adapting the business to reflect the changing needs of consumers and advertisers.”

Simon Waugh and Gavin Patterson are also set to step down as non-executive directors.

Over the last year the share price of the company has plunged dramatically due to the falling sales figures and steady decline in advertising revenue.
