Tayburn put their stamp on Burns celebrations
To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Royal Mail commissioned Edinburgh’s Tayburn to design a new set of commemorative stamps.
The stamps went on sale yesterday (22 January), one featuring a reproduction of the famous 1787 portrait of the poet by Scottish artist Alexander Nasmyth, on the other one of his most famous lines, “A Man’s a Man for a’ that” from the poem ‘Is There for Honest Poverty’.
Erick Davidson, chairman at Tayburn, commented: “It was a real opportunity to rejoice the life of a true Scottish hero”.
“Robbie Burns was a champion of liberalism and socialism - a Bob Dylan of the 18th Century if you like, so it was a joy to work on the project.”
The design consultancy have a lengthy relationship with Royal Mail, previously designing a set of stamps to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Burns’ death, and in 1999 designing four definitive stamps for Scotland depicting a saltire, a thistle, the rampant lion and tartan.
The stamps have been produced to coincide with Homecoming Scotland 2009.
