Hemisphere has been appointed to produce design and marketing work for 2009 exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum North.

The Manchester consultancy won a five-way competitive pitch to design the venue's major exhibition for 2009, Prisoners of War.

The exhibition will use a mix of art, documents, photographs, film and sound to tell the stories of prisoners during the second world war and will run from May next year until January 2010.

The museum, based at Salford Quays, has also selected Hemisphere to produce the marketing campaign for its Witness: Women War Artists exhibition, which will run from February to April 2009.

Hemisphere won the project after pitching against the museum's other rostered agencies, and the campaign is expected to include posters, direct mail, invitations and outdoor and press adverts.

The project follows Hemisphere's appointment in October to design the Women War Artists exhibition.

Sue Vanden, marketing director of Hemisphere, said: "The focus of our approach for the Prisoners of War exhibition lies with illustrating how indomitable the human spirit is, despite the hardships, punishments and poor conditions suffered by those in captivity.

"With the Witness: Women War Artists marketing campaign, the challenge lies in communicating the exhibition’s three key elements - women, art and war – in equal measures."

Rachel Knight, Imperial War Museum North's head of exhibitions, said: "Prisoners of War will be our ninth exhibition working with Hemisphere, yet the agency never fails to bring a fresh and surprising approach to each subject.”
