Metro.co.uk, the website of the free UK newspaper, has appointed Edinburgh agency Shake to work on its social media marketing and search engine optimisation.

Metro has invested significantly in its web presence and announced in March the launch of three new digital platforms, MEview, an online video content sharing site, MEmusic, an online music site and Metro.mobi, a mobile internet service.

James Oliver, CEO for the Shake Group, said: "We are so pleased to be working with Metro across their natural SEO and social media platforms - we know that their approach is probably the most forward thinking in the newspaper market.

“Their MEview, MEmusic and optimised mobile Internet sites are truly leading properties within the main digital umbrella, which makes Metro a pleasure to work alongside."

Metro's digital portfolio has recently grown to include a shopping portal, a Champions League fantasy football game to sit alongside its Premier League game and a Premier League highlights package in association with Virgin Media.

The website has one million UK unique users and aims to grow traffic significantly over the next 12 months.
