Maker of Scottish soft drink Irn Bru, AG Barr was last night recognised as client of the Year at the Scottish Advertising Awards.

The awards, held at Edinburgh’s The Corn Exchange, recognised the last year of Scottish Advertising in association with industry trade magazine The Drum.

It was a great year for AG Barr which picked up several awards including one for Irn Bru’s summer television campaign, ‘IF’, created by Edinburgh-based advertising agency The Leith Agency (winning Best Commercial over 30 Seconds), while, the campaign for AG Barr’s water brand Strathmore, also created by The Leith Agency, picked up several awards on the evening, including Best Television Campaign, Best Commercial of 21-30 seconds for its ‘Skipping’ advert and Best Cinema Campaign.

Other advertising agencies winning on the evening were The Union, which picked up Advertising Agency of the Year along with several other awards, MediaCom for Media Buying Point of Sale of the Year and The National Galleries of Scotland for its Andy Warhol tribute ‘Cans’ which picked up the Grand Prix prize, as well as the award for Best Unusual Size or Special Build.

This was the fourth Grand Prix award that ‘Cans’ has won this year having also picked up the prize at the Scottish Design Awards, The Roses Advertising Awards and the irreverent Chip Shop Awards - a spoof advertising festival.

Peter Gatley, copywriter for Weiden + Kennedy London, who chaired the judging panel, commented on the Warhol tribute: “I thought the overall standard of work at this year’s Scottish Advertising Awards was good. Even better I thought the best pieces of work were genuinely world class. Regarding the Grand Prix, I don't believe there is a team/agency anywhere who could have produced a more dramatic, relevant, or cost effective piece of work for the Warhol exhibit. It's as perfect a solution to a brief you can imagine.”

Richard Draycott, editor of The Drum commented on The Union winning Advertising Agency of the Year: “The Union won because they have amassed the most awards at the Scottish Design Awards, which is testament to their ability to devise creative ad campaigns. The industry also lent its voice through out peer poll in which we asked all ad agencies which agency they had admired the most over the year.

The Union has also continued to ad significant clients to its client list over the last year, which in the current economical climate is vitally important.”
