The changes will affect the Birmingham Post – which is to switch from Broadsheet to tabloid format - the Birmingham Mail, and the Sunday Mercury.

Four senior editors have been appointed to form a team of executive editors including Mike Macklin, former Birmingham Mail assistant editor who is now the deputy regional production editor.

Gary Denning, chief sub editor on the Birmingham Mail has been made head of content for news and features, Steve Murphy, picture editor on the Mail is now regional images editor while Ken Montgomery is regional sports editor with the creation of one sports desk across the three Birmingham titles owned by Trinity Mirror.

The changes follow appointments made in September which included Paul Cole, former deputy editor of the Sunday Mercuty who became executive editor of the paper.

Mike Hughes was made executive editor of the Birmingham Post while Stacey Barnfield took over as executive editor of the Birmingham Mail after Carole Cole’s departure.

The executive editors will be based at a joint newsdesk as they work together on the editorial of the Birmingham titles.

Former production editor Ray Dunn has also been appointed as regional production editor to work with the editors, executive editors and desk heads and will oversee the new web-based content management system, ContentWatch, and new production units in the Midlands.
