Newsquest is now advertising for its successor to Charles McGhee, editor of The Herald, but few would have expected the position to become a dual role.

The advert invites applications for the role of editor of The Herald/editor in chief of the Herald & Times Group.

“This is a high profile role with the responsibility of providing editorial direction to a team of more than 200 journalists and editorial staff across three prestigious Scottish titles – The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times,” reads the ad.

It continues; “You must be an experienced editor and manager and have a sound knowledge of all aspects of a modern newspaper. You will be a proven team player and should understand and embrace the challenges of a highly-competitive and rapidly-evolving newspaper industry ensuring that effective strategies are implemented to meet the requirements of our print and online readership, whilst ensuring optimum use of our resources.”

The role also requires the successful applicant be an ambassador for the company, establishing good working relationships with Scottish stakeholders.

Tim Blott, managing director of Newsquest The Herald & Evening Times Group, explained; "There is a growing need to have a co-ordinated approach for the use of all our editorial resources, which is why we have set up a multi-media desk and have agreements with staff and unions on cross-title working."
