A survey of 100 employers and employees in the Scottish marketing sector has found that a company’s products and brands are the least attractive factors for employees when joining a marketing company.

The survey, commissioned by recruitment firm, Eden Scott’s sales and marketing team, also found that employers believe that a company’s reputation was the most important factor in attracting potential marketing employees, while employees have rated this as one the least appealing aspects.

As well as 75% of respondents believing that reputation was important, the survey found that 75% of employers believed that employees should be attracted by the job content and scope within the company. 58% would be attracted by culture and 58% would also be attracted through career prospects.

Employees found that the three most important factors in attracting then as a candidate were salary and related benefits (mentioned by 66%), career prospects (66%) and job content and scope (65%) The least important factors were products and brands (29%) and reputation (38%).

Nadine Pierce, managing consultant of sales and marketing at Eden Scott commented; “It was interesting to note that employers and employees have slightly different opinions on attraction factors. The company’s reputation was seen by employers as the most important factor, but by employees as the second least important. This should give both employers and employees food for thought. We were particularly surprised that marketing professionals rate products and brands as the least important factor. It may be prudent for employers to bear these results in mind to remain competitive in the marketplace. However, things may change with the current economic climate, which may lead to fewer opportunities being available.”
