Signature Pub Group has commissioned Nevis Design Consultants to develop a brand identity for The Rutland Hotel in advance of the re-opening at the end of June after an extensive, multi-million pound refurbishment.

The Rutland Hotel is the biggest venture yet for the Signature Pub Group, and the landmark site in Scotland’s capital city boasts a bar, one hundred cover restaurant, late lounge club as well as the twelve bespoke, boutique-style bedrooms.

While the overall theme of the interior design is elegance the hotel also has a distinctly modern side with an abundance of cutting edge technology throughout including a much heralded iBar.

Nevis was appointed by Signature Pub Group’s Head of PR & Communications Emma Miller: “The brief for Nevis was to capture the juxtapositions of The Rutland Hotel and to successfully create a brand identity that reflected not only the tradition of the building but the modernity of the project. All of this with a generous splash of humour and dash of cool. We are delighted with the results. Not only did they deliver what was promised in an extremely tight time frame but, Design Director David Huckell really threw himself into the project his enthusiasm was evident in his work.”

Nevis wanted to challenge preconceptions about the positioning of The Rutland Hotel, with tone of voice key to communicating ‘the most exciting and elegant new venue in town’. Lack of photography meant the brand and the sub-brand for the late lounge club, The One Below, had to be strong enough to stand alone. Using ‘irreverence’, ‘intelligence’ and ‘stylish’ as key stimuli, creative copylines were devised and featured across all hotel and bar communication materials. The identity itself is a contemporary rendering of a traditional-style signature R, and there has also been a sub-brand developed for the late lounge, The One Below.

David Huckell, Nevis Design Director added: “Being part of a team that has injected new life into a beautiful Edinburgh landmark has been a privilege, and to change people's perceptions of what was there before has been a challenge. We are delighted with the work and feel sure it will capture the imagination of both Edinburgh's social scene and international visitors.”
