Managing director, or ‘head of order’, Tim Trapp, explained: “We held a meeting to discuss the future of the agency just before Christmas, and then Phil decided to cash in his shares.

“It was completely amicable at the time and things remain very well-natured. We’re still in touch with Phil and I know he wishes Pravda well.”

Trapp said that Howells had not left to pursue another venture and understands that he has been spending his newfound independence “freelancing and playing a bit of golf.”

The agency has been quick to fill the gap left by Howells’s departure, with Jim Lobley, who had been working at Pravda on a freelance basis, stepping into the art direction role full-time.

Lobley has been handed the offbeat title, ‘head of steam’, which Trapp said is a “fitting title” for him, having worked together at Cheetham Bell.

“Jim really is a larger than life character, and to be overseeing all art direction you really have to have the ability to buoy everyone up.”

Howells launched Pravda alongside ‘head of chaos’ Simon Sinclair in 2003.
