PaperCo has promoted Alistair MacDonald to be managing director of Donald Murray Paper, the Glasgow-based regional trading division that formed the bedrock on which the national merchant group was built. He takes over the top job following seven years as the division’s sales director.

MacDonald, 49, joined Donald Murray as a trainee sales representative 23 years ago, when the company was in the early stages of evolving from Scotland’s leading independent paper merchant into a key constituent of what has since become the PaperCo group.

PaperCo’s managing director, Alistair Gough, said: “During his long service Alistair MacDonald has dedicated himself to the continued sales development and success of the business and I am delighted that this opportunity is now available for him to continue his progression within the company.”

As managing director, MacDonald will be responsible for the operations of what would be, if still independent, one of the UK’s largest regional paper merchants in its own right. Its network of branches extends not only across Scotland, but to Belfast, Bristol and Tyne & Wear.

“To take the reins at Donald Murray is an honour and an enormous challenge, but thanks to the superb team of people that are the lifeblood of the company, it is not at all daunting,” said MacDonald. “I relish the opportunity to help achieve even greater success in the future.”
