Canongate Publishing’s newly appointed design chief Mark Ecob has proposed to nurture local design talent as part of his remit for the Edinburgh book publishing group.

Ecob was appointed as head of design earlier this year, and will now supervise the artistic direction of the publisher’s book production, producing covers for the publisher’s ouvre which includes Booker prize winning author Yann Martel, Margaret Atwood, and the JM Barrie estate.

Ecob aims to regenerate the Scottish design pool, which in his view has not been well served by Scottish publishers.

”In terms of the illustration commissions and photography commissions from the houses up here, it just isn’t happening,” he said.

”It is something I really want to try and remedy. When I was in London, the most talented illustrators I used at Orion were Scottish. It is shame that everyone feels they have to get on the train and go down south.”
