Brendan Callaghan, media director at Birmingham’s Universal McCann has scotched industry speculation that he may be about to join Brilliant’s rumoured new venture - which industry insiders believe will see Paul Bramwell heading up a Birmingham based branch of the agency - when he leaves Universal McCann on 2 November.

Callaghan, who has been with Universal McCann for six years, confirmed that he will be leaving the agency on the 2 November, but confirmed that he has no concrete plans for beyond that date, telling The Drum that he has so far not given any thought to what his actions may be afterwards.

However Callaghan did offer his backing to Paul Bramwell, having also been made aware of information circulating throughout the region that Brilliant are poised to open in Birmingham.

“I have heard similar rumours to you about Paul setting up the Birmingham office of Brilliant, and I wish him the best of luck in doing so. Paul is someone I greatly admire and respect,” Callaghan told The Drum. “He is someone that has a wonderful reputation within the advertising industry and if someone can make a success of this new agency, it is him.”

Callaghan also endorsed Brilliant’s planned move to the region, welcoming the undertaking as a shot in the arm for the Midlands scene.

“Birmingham and the West Midlands needs a new media agency. If Paul sets up then it will be a real boost to the region,” he said.

“For too long there has not been enough high profile, media agencies within the area. Maybe Paul setting up will be able to kickstart the potential that exists in the region and we will see the West Midlands media scene grow.”
