Morphy Richards has appointed BJL to its marketing and communications roster, following a competitive pitch.

The account was resigned by BDH\\TBWA, now TBWA\\Manchester, three months ago due to a conflict with haircare brand ghd, which had appointed the agency in January. Since then, Morphy Richards has been in talks with a number agencies and held a pitch last month.

BJL will join Sheffield-based Uber on the roster, which has worked with the household appliance brand since 2004. Prior to being handled by BDH, the Morphy Richards advertising account had a nine-year stint with Leicester-based Big Communications.

In separate news, BJL has announced that David Crawford, the former head of McCann-i, will join the firm in November as its first ever digital director.

Crawford will arrive from Media Square-owned agency twentysix Leeds, where he was deputy managing director. There, he worked on clients such as Procter & Gamble, Empire Stores, Johnston Press and Silentnight.

Crawford is the second board-level appointment at BJL in as many months, following the arrival of business development director Charlotte Thompson from McCann Erickson Communications House. It is speculated that Thompson was instrumental in the recruitment of Crawford, after working together at Prestbury-based McCanns.

Nicky Unsworth managing director at BJL, said: “Our digital offering has grown organically over the past two years as our integrated accounts have looked to us to take brand ideas across channels. We are delighted that in David we now have a real digital heavyweight to lead this important division. He is a digital native – he lives and breathes it. Add this to his passion for creative and he was the perfect fit for BJL.”

BJL’s digital client base includes Bradford & Bingley, Pilkington Glass, Fisherman’s Friend, Regus International and British Airways.
